Margaret Lassiter King, 96, died August 2, 2010. Margaret was born June 22, 1914 in Tupelo, Arkansas to Enos Wallace and Lena Mae Lassiter. Her parents moved to Little Rock where she grew up and graduated from high school. As a young girl, Margaret became a gifted pianist and used that musical gift her entire life. Her talents were in demand for social events and at the Little Rock radio station. After graduation from high school, the family moved to Kentucky, and she continued her music education at Murray State College. It was there that she met and married a handsome football and basketball star, Melville Keith King, on February 15, 1935. During her college days, she and Keith loved to go to big band dances and were avid bridge players.
After graduation, Keith accepted a job with the Humble Oil Company, and the pair of them moved to Baytown, Texas. Margaret quickly involved herself with music while being a devoted wife and mother. She taught piano lessons to hundreds of Baytonians over a 40-year career and was pianist and organist for Grace United Methodist Church for 47 years. When she retired as church organist, she received a proclamation from the mayor's office declaring July 17, 1995 as Margaret King Day, honoring her service and devotion to the Lord.
Family members who will fondly remember her love, her gentle spirit, her cooking, and her music include daughter Barbara Kay Patton and husband Jerry of Tyler, Texas, and daughter Carole Ann Roush and husband Bob of Houston, Texas. Grandchildren who will cherish the memories of their "Mammaw" are Laura Patton Andringa and husband Randy of Aledo, Tx; Sharon Patton of Keller, Tx; Jonathan Roush of Austin, Tx; and Stephanie Roush Shaffer of Laguna Beach, Ca. She is also survived by four great grandchildren: Kaylee, Keith, and Kevin Andringa and Carmella Shaffer.
The family would like to thank the many kind persons who helped care for Mrs. King during her latter years, especially Shirley Brooks and her team of caregivers, Dr. Geraldine Salmeron, Dr. Robert Luchi and the geriatric clinicians at the Huffington Center on Aging at Baylor College of Medicine.
Memorial services will be held at the Weiss Memorial Chapel at The Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 5th. A family gathering at her gravesite will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
The family requests memorial gifts in lieu of flowers be made to the charity of your choice or to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
