Ronnie D. Ennis, 74, of Summerville, SC, died Wednesday, March 2, 2011.
Respects may be paid at his residence Tuesday, March 8, 2011, from 6 to 9 p.m. Burial will be at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, SC, on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at 1 p.m.
Ronnie was born in 1936 in Newport, Arkansas, the son of Rex Dale Ennis, Sr., and Geraldine McCoy Ennis.
He spent his early years in Weldon, Arkansas, of which he had fond memories. After high school, he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He then attended Arkansas State College, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics. After school, Ronnie returned to the Air Force, serving as an avionics officer at bases in England, California, The Netherlands, and Charleston, SC. He also served in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.
While stationed in Europe, he met his wife, Charlotte. They were married in 1974 at Zeist, The Netherlands, and their daughter, Stephanie, was born in 1976.
Following retirement in 1979 as a Major, the family moved back to the Charleston area. Ronnie obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching from The Citadel, then taught mathematics at Berkeley Middle School from 1982 to 1989. He then served as a substitute teacher in the Dorchester Two School District.
Ronnie was an avid reader, especially of thrillers. People thought he loved pool, golf, football, and cards, but the truth is that he loved a good wager above all. He was an active member of the Bogies pool team out of Happy Hours bar. Ronnie was a culinary genius when it came to a fried-bologna sandwich. His sense of humor was his best trait, although he would tell you it was his good looks.
A beloved husband, father, and friend, he will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife, Ann-Charlotte Grenninger Ennis; his daughter, Stephanie Ennis Snider (Brandon) of Hanahan, SC; his mother, Geraldine McCoy Ennis, of Walnut Ridge, AR; his brothers, Billy Mack Ennis (Paula) of Jackson, TN, and Rex Dale Ennis, Jr. (Melissa) of Conway, AR; his sister, Joyce Fanny Heffernan, of Memphis, TN; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Rex Dale Ennis, Sr. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Boulevard, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464.
