John Nicholas Bryan Shelton 1868-1929, Husband of Minnie Cornelia Johnson Shelton

John Nicholas Bryan Shelton was born in Mount Vernon Township, Lawrence County Missouri on May 2, 1868 the son of Gideon Thompson Shelton a native of Todd County, Kentucky and Susan Elizabeth {Swearingen} Shelton born in Cooper County, Missouri. Susan Elizabeth a daughter of Nicholas Swearingen.

John attended the common schools and the Baptist College at Peirce City, Missouri and finishing his education at the State University of Missouri in Columbia. For the following 20 years he was a teacher.

In July 1908 he moved to Mount Vernon and managed the Lawrence County Mutual Telephone Company. He married Miss Minnie Johnson on May 26, 1889 who was born in Mount Vernon Township the daughter of John E born in Hawkins County, Tennessee and Ella {Patton} Johnson was born in Mount Vernon. John and Minnie had five children: Eula Minnie, Jacob N, Cora Faye, Harlan Bryan, Lorine Maude.

Mr. Shelton is a member of the Baptist Church and served as Sunday school superintendent since January 1912, also a member of Mason of Mount Vernon Lodge, belonging to the Royal Arch Chapter and finally a member of the Odd Fellows and Woodmen of the World.
