Sterne was born about 1743 in Halifax County, Virginia, the son of John ??? Simmons and Rebecca.
He died on 21 Oct 1824 in Lincoln County, Georgia.
His wife was Gracey Nagel, who he married in ABT 1780. The place has not been found. They had no known children.

Dorothy,
I'd forgotten how voluminous my notes were from the records of Lincoln Co. I'm afraid I'll have to ask for some time on this, and will have to pass it along piece meal. I think you will get sort of an overall perspective from two obituaries and the Will of Stern Simmons Senior.
OBITS:
"Simmons, John Esq - Died January 19, 1827 at his residence in Lincoln Co., left a widow and children.
Simmons, Mr. Stern Sr. - 80 years, died October 24, 1828, at Augusta. For 40 years a followr of Jesus."
Both obtis aret taken from an Augusta newspaper, which I abreviated "AC," and nearly two years later I can't remember what the "C" stood for. These were contained in a work entitled Marriages & Deaths Abstracted From Extant GA Newspapers," by M.B. Warren & S.F White 1972, Heritage Papers, Danielsville, GA.
As will be seen from the will, this John Simmons is probably the deceased son of Stern Simmons Sr., as referred to therein.
ABSTRACT OF THE LAST WILL & TESTAMENT OF STERN SIMMONS SENIOR - Book (C & D) (3 & 4) page 220, Records of Lincoln Co., GA.
DATE: October 18, 1828
TESTATOR: Stern Simmons Senior
EXECUTORS: Sons Thomas and Stern Simmons Jr.
BEQUESTS: "...And with regard to the things of this world with which it has pleased God to bless me, I wish them distributed among my beloved wife, my two sons now living and certain of my grandchildren, namely four children of my son John Simmons, deceased:
1st My beloved wife Gracey Simmons...
2nd My sons Thomas Simmons and Stern Simmons Jr....
3rd Granddaughter Sarah Simmons, daughter of my son John Simmons deceased...
4th To my grand children John Simmons and Stern Simmons and Mary Ann Simmons, children of my son John Simmons, deceased...
WITTNESS - Thomas W. Murray, Thomas G. Grace, and Peyton W. Sale
RECORDED - January 10, 1829."
It, thus, appears that three are three Stern Simmons representing three generations; Stern Simmons Sr., Stern Simmons Jr., his son, and Stern Simmons, his grandson, being the son of John Simmons, decesed.
More to follow, as time allows.

The John Simmons you are researching was the son of Sterne Simmons, Sr., and Grace Nagel. That line is as follows:
John A. Simmons, b. 11/5/1785, d. 1/19/1827
married Mary Ann Matherson,1788-1867)
Their children were:
John A. Simmons, Jr. M.D., (1821-1852)
Sterne S. Simmons,(1824-1853)
Mary Ann Simmons,(1826-1856)
The children were all born and died in Goshen, Lincoln County, GA.
My line descends from Sterne Simmons, Jr., son of Sterne Simmons, Sr., and brother to the John A. Simmons you are seeking.
