Obituary from the Gonzales Inquirer - Dec. 12, 1889
Died-At his home in Gonzales on Monday, December 9, 1889, at 5:40 p.m., Thomas J. Ponton, aged 42 years, 8 months and 3 days.
Again the sickle of death has been thrust in our community cutting down in the prime of life one of Gonzales most prominent lawyers- Hon. T.J. Ponton.
He had been sick only a few days with pneumonia when he died. He was a native Gonzalian and the son of Andrew Ponton, who was alcalde of Gonzales during its early life. For eight years he was district attorney for the Twenty-fifth judicial district, which position he filled with ability and success. He possessed fine legal ability and was zealous advocate.
He leaves five bright children without the protecting care of parents, his wife having died about two years ago. He was buried Tuesday evening in the Masonic cemetery.
