Obit -Bill Sheffield December 22, 1935 - July 12, 2012, Itawamba County, Mississippi

Billy Joe Sheffield, 76, died Thursday, July 12, 2012, at his home after a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). He was born in Lee County on December 22, 1935, to Samuel Grady Sheffield and Eunice McMullan Sheffield. He graduated from Itawamba Agricultural High School and attended Mississippi State University. He was a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church and the Wilemon-Scott Sunday School Class, after having previously served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Fulton and Greenwood Baptist Church. A successful entrepreneur, he, along with his wife, owned and operated Bill’s Minit Mart in Peppertown for 43 years. He closed the store in 2011 due to his failing health. During his 43 years in business, he employed countless young people, giving many their first job. “Mr. Bill,” as he was affectionately known by his store family, was extremely generous to all his employees and especially to anyone in need. His unequaled generosity was extended to strangers, friends, and family alike. Just last week, his life story was featured in the Itawamba County Times. He was on the Board of Directors at Bancorp South and a volunteer for the Peppertown Fire Department where he was Treasurer for over 15 years. He served his country as a soldier in the Mississippi National Guard. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his grandchildren. They considered “Pop” to be the cornerstone of their family. He loved his Lord, his family, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Dr. Forrest Sheffield and Rev. Mark Tutor officiating. Larry Pate will give the eulogy. Burial will be in Dorsey Memorial Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lula Ruth “Cissy” Murphy Sheffield; two daughters, Melanie Jennings (Thomas) of Grenada and Myra Walker (Dr. Meredith) of Jonesboro, AR; three grandchildren, Anna Clare Walker and Loden Philips Walker of Jonesboro, AR, and Etta Kathryn Jennings of Grenada; one brother, Charles Sheffield (Jo Anne) of Tupelo; two nieces, Judy Loden (Jerry) and Joan Dozier Weathers (Larry) of Tupelo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Barry Lee Sheffield; and a nephew, Eddie Dozier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p. m. Friday at the funeral home.
